These parakeets have become one of the most loved pet birds world wide because of their absolutely adorable personalities. They like being in the presence of their owners even if it’s only in the same room. Cockatiels other than bigger parrots like the African Grey and Cockatoos are family birds. Which means if they are hand-reared and tame they will fit in perfectly with the whole family, from mom and dad to the smallest sibling. Where other parrots are known to choose someone in the family to connect with and will become aggressive towards other members of the family. You will experience that as soon as you remove them from their cage they sparkle of happiness but dare to put them back in the cage.

Cockatiels originate from Australia where they thrive in the wide open semi-arid climate and are always close to water. They are not commonly seen as lone flying birds and are more often seen in pairs or small flocks. Their diet consist of a well balanced mix of fresh vegetables and a variety of seeds, they absolutely love their greens. In the wild they normally fly to the ground to forage for food and snacks. It’s always a fun way to sprinkle a few seeds or snacks on the ground floor of the cage for them to find.

They are not very loud birds in comparison to any other parrots or members of the cockatoo family. This might be because of their place of origin, most parrots come from rain-forest habitats where cockatiels come from semi-desert habitats and open plains. They breed relatively easy and right through the year in countries other than Australia because of attributes like day times and an abundance of food and water.

The females will almost always lay eggs even without a male nearby, this may result in the female needing more calcium and nutrition than males. Males are known to be more talkative and sometimes seen as the more patient one between the two. Some might even learn to say a few words. Females can be cheeky and territorial but very loving and caring.

These birdies will climb into the deepest pockets of your heart with their cute chirps and funky moves, oh yes they like music alright. They like to investigate everything new which makes them very intelligent and fun to play with. Cockatiels are relatively affordable and easy to come by.
